VISITING side Henley Hawks Women picked up a bonus point from their defeat at table-topping Richmond Ladies 2nds on Sunday.
The weather played a significant part in the final outcome of the match as a strong wind whistled in from one end of the ground.
Henley had to battle into this first half, play uphill and look to control a strong and buoyant Richmond side.
Henley came out all guns blazing and took Richmond head on. The pack set out their stall early and put the hosts’ scrum under pressure each time. Dudding was orchestrating things out wide and got in behind on numerous occasions.
Good continuity ensued but any turnovers were punished with their numbers nine and 10 getting two passes to the outside or kicks in behind that sent the visitors back 60 metres.
With limited ball Richmond were clinical in their approach and seemed to score off each one. Despite playing some good rugby Henley were to find themselves 29-0 down at the interval.
The Hawks got off to a good start straight from the kick-off in the second half. The ball was allowed to bounce into the 22 where Burger gathered and ran the distance to score.
Belief was building and good rush defence put Richmond under pressure, who were now struggling to cope with the elements.
Good kick chase from the ever present Balmer held the ball up inside their 22 and the following phases allowed Dudding to grab the second and it was game on.
Richmond, who had been under pressure for 20 minutes, then broke out and their pacey 10 looped around the outside to finish off in the corner and make it 34-10.
This gave them breathing space as the Hawks forwards in Tadman, Wheeler and Ferguson continued to run hard. The game was now being played mostly in the Richmond half and Tomas was able to work herself into the game. She crossed the line with 10 minutes to go, Dudding converted and kept the pressure on.
With time running out they pushed on for the bonus points and maybe the win. Henley worked the ball to the outside and Tomas kicked down the pitch from the half way. The following chase allowed her to gather well on the line and make it 34-22 and claim a bonus point.
