CHALLENGING conditions saw early interchanges of knock-ons as both sides struggled to retain much possession in this third round cup clash, writes Annette Thomas.
Abbey Nuns’ defence held steadfast though, through several excellent cover tackles by full-back Mira Moran, winger Sarah Northover and centre Alice Denton.
Their patience in attack was rewarded when winger Kate Jayne-Coupe pounced on a loose ball and ran half the pitch to score. She was involved again minutes later when a strong run by prop Hollie King set her up for her second try to secure a 10-0 lead at the break.
The second half brought further action as Oakmeadians replied with two tries of their own, orchestrated by their strong half-back pairing.
But as the hour mark approached, the Nuns’ superior fitness shone through. Excellent passing by the backs set up fly-half Kat Isaac for her maiden try of the season.
Then winger Becky Welbourn touched down in the corner after an overlap was spotted by captain Meg Fowler.
Abbey Nuns will play in the fourth round on February 7 but face Richmond in the league at home on Sunday.
