HENLEY HAWKS WOMEN suffered a heavy defeat at home to Aylesford Bulls in the final
HENLEY HAWKS WOMEN suffered a heavy defeat at home to Aylesford Bulls in the final round of the Senior Cup.
The visitors were bottom of the Premiership but the Hawks were hampered by a handful of late changes to the back-line, some being made the morning of the fixture.
The late disruption unfortunately had a bad effect and although the Hawks were only 5-0 behind after 27 minutes their inability to exit and clear their 22 meant they rarely broke out of their half.
Aylesford were able to take advantage of the pressure and ran in three tries, off turn-overs, within the next 10 minutes to go in at the break 24-0.
To add to the problems, the visitors had captain Catherine Spencer, the former England number eight, in their ranks. Despite still finding her feet after an injury lay-off the Hawks struggled to contain her and control the set piece.
Henley continued to fight in the second half, none more so than Emma Tadman, whose strong runs provided some momentum. But despite their heavy pack tiring, the Bulls were still able to run in further scores.
Henley enjoyed a strong last 20 minutes in the Aylesford half with Wheeler, Tadman and Solowin providing runs but they went unrewarded. Match awards went to Tadman for player’s player and Tina Simpson from the coaches.
