HENLEY HAWKS U9s ended their season in style on Sunday by being crowned champions of Oxfordshire, winning the main County Cup at the Oxfordshire Mini Rugby Festival and thereby defending the crown they won as U8s last year.
A squad of 17 travelled to Chipping Norton RFC to represent two Henley U9 teams - Hawks and Harriers — at the traditional end-of-season finale competed for by 24 teams.
The Harriers team of Freddie Ash, Max Cranstoun, Jamie Halliwell, Ben Hemmings, Ollie Johnson, Henry Robertson, Artie Simpson, Tom Smith and Archie Stickley started with a 4-0 win over The Grove and then had a 3-3 draw with Witney before a few tough games saw them finish fourth in their pool. This saw them move forward to a fourth place semi-final where they narrowly lost 4-2 to Chipping Norton who went on to win the final.
The Hawks team of Seb Bourne, Jago Dyer, Ollie Goforth, Charlie Hunt, Oscar Thomas, Jake Williams, Sam Winters and Tom Yeoman won all five group games to top their pool, before beating home team Chipping Norton 5-0 in the semi-final to progress to the final against Stow-on-the-Wold.
A brace of tries from Tom Yeoman and one for Jago Dyer in the final saw the Hawks win 3-0 and round off a successful day as champions of Oxfordshire remaining undefeated, scoring 28 tries and not conceding a single one in their seven games thanks to some excellent defensive work.
