£36,000 to replace hall roof

THE roof of Sonning Common village hall is to be replaced.

The parish council will spend about £36,000 on the work at the building in Wood Lane but is to receive a grant of more than £13,000 from South Oxfordshire District Council.

The council says the current felt on the flat roof is worn out and at risk of leaking.

Parish clerk Philip Collings said: “They will strip off the old roofing first, repair the roof and insulate it before they put down new boards, felt and tar.”

The insulation will help improve the energy efficiency of the hall.

Becky Jenkins, who is an assistant at the council, said: “We can start work hopefully in the spring or early summer. We don’t think the roof has been replaced since the village hall was built in the Fifties.”

Carole Lewis, who chairs the council, said: “This is work that we need to have done. The roof is important. It is excellent news that we have been given this grant.”

The hall operates as the council’s office and can be hired for events.
