French couple open artisan bakery to public

AN artisan bakery in Stoke Row has started selling directly to the public.

The Wild Frog Bakehouse, which was opened by French couple Jules Chambs and Pauline Philippe in 2022, has been supplying only wholesalers in Marlow, Henley and Reading as well as attending markets.

But now it is to open its doors to the public every Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning.

This began on Saturday when more than 100 people descended on the bakery, which is based in an industrial park off Busgrove Lane. The shop will sell French-inspired sweet and savoury pastries, sourdough bread and weekly specials freshly prepared by Mr Chambs, a
31-year-old pastry chef and baker.

He and Ms Philippe, 32, met in 2022 when they were both working at Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir Aux Quat’Saisons restaurant and hotel.

Mr Chambs said: “We were looking at other options to explore because the wholesale was getting a bit difficult to manage.

“We were having to travel quite far and there were only so many markets we could do because they all take place at the weekend.

“We started looking for premises in the area but we couldn’t really afford any, so we thought we would open the bakery to the public and see what the response was. The first day was incredible and the feedback has been really positive. Everyone has been really excited, which is great.”

Customer Caroline James, 70, said: “It’s about time they did this. We are so lucky to have this in the village — they have the best cinnamon swirls. I wish them all the success.”
