German hosts retain title for third year

HENLEY Swimming Club visited twinned town Leichlingen for its annual match last month.

Thirty-two members travelled to Germany and spent four days there but were beaten in the gala, which is hosted alternately by the clubs each year, for the third year running.

All swimmers competed in four races in each age group but the main deciding event was a relay involving 12 members from each club.

Each swimmer had to swim 12 50m legs made up of butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle.

Having lost the contest the previous two years, Henley made a promising start as they built up a lead of several metres.

However, Leichlingen’s team contained more experience and they eventually overtook Henley to retain the trophy by about two metres.

Members of each team gathered for a party later in the evening and there were speeches by Henley president Dave Challis and boys’ and girls’ captains Will Young and Amy Hall, as well as the Leichlingen president and captains.
