HENLEY Tennis Club’s men’s first team ran out comfortable winners in their away Berkshire Dunlop Winter League Division 6 East clash with Shinfield 2nds on Sunday.
The pairing of David Hunte and James Cudd set the tone early, winning their opening rubber 6-3, 6-3, before following up with a 6-1, 6-4 victory.
Matt Hallam and Frankie Rogan produced an impressive display of their own, securing both of their matches in style. They closed out their first rubber 6-3, 6-1 before wrapping up the second 6-4, 6-2.
In Division 7 West, Henley 2nds tied with visitors Binfield 2nds, two rubbers each and five sets each. Rob Dickie and Chris Ward, in his debut for Henley 2nds, were slow to get going and went down 6-1, 6-2 to Binfield’s first pair.
Meanwhile Jeremy Wright and Paul Ulrich saw off the Binfield second pair 6-2, 7-5. In the second round rubbers, Wright and Ulrich lost narrowly after a championship tie break to Binfield’s first pair (6-2, 4-6, 0-1).
In the final rubber Dickie and Ward fought back from one set down to take the second set and the following championship tie break to square the match (6-7, 6-4, 1-0).
Berkshire League rules dictate that points cannot be shared equally in drawn matches. The final outcome is likely to be determined in a further championship tie break.
