A tightly-buttoned tearjerker about a doomed love affair is recreated for the stage in Noel Coward’s Brief Encounter on Air
A tightly-buttoned tearjerker about a doomed love affair is recreated for the stage in Noel Coward’s Brief Encounter on Air at Theatre Royal Windsor.
Jenny Seagrove takes on the role of Laura Jesson, trapped in a loving but stale marriage. Martin Shaw plays Alec Harvey, a married man who catches Laura’s eye at the railway station. The pair soon find themselves drawn together, but will circumstances force them apart?
The 1940s-style radio performance evokes the glamour, style and also the repression of an era when divorce was taboo and a glance across a carriage could resound with sexual tension.
Bursting with smouldering looks and heartbreaking exchanges, it’s the perfect romantic show for Valentine’s Day and as the ill-starred pair try to say their last goodbyes and a steam train whistles out of the station, handkerchiefs will be needed at the ready.
Performances are from Wednesday to Saturday, February 21. Tickets are £13-£29. Box office 01753 853888.
