HENLEY could suffer more traffic congestion following the closure of Marlow Bridge
HENLEY could suffer more traffic congestion following the closure of Marlow Bridge.
The structure was closed after being damaged by a heavy goods vehicle on Sunday and could be closed for two months.
Now some drivers are using Henley Bridge in order to cross the River Thames and this has already led to congestion and queues around the Burchetts Green roundabout where traffic turns off the A404 to reach Henley.
Buckinghamshire County Council, the highways authority, said the bridge would remain closed for safety reasons while experts assessed the extent of the damage.
Police were called shortly before 10.30pm on Sunday to a report of a lorry exceeding the bridge’s weight limit and having damaged its wheels.
The driver was issued with a fixed penalty notice.
A Latvian company has since apologised.
Henley councillors have previously asked for a sign to direct heavy goods vehicles away from Henley to be installed on the Burchetts Green roundabout but have been ignored by the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, which is responsible for it.
