Bridge toll could rise due to cost of refurb delays

THE cost of crossing Whitchurch toll bridge could go up next year.

The Whitchurch Bridge Company says it will review the need to increase its 40p cash charge when the bridge re-opens in September.

The bridge closed for refurbishment in October and this was originally expected to cost about £4.4million.

Now the company says it is likely to cost nearer £5.6million because of delays caused by flooding in January and February.

If it decides to apply to the Government for permission to raise the toll, it would do so in the autumn. There would then be a public inquiry, which could take up to a year, so the increase would be unlikely to come into effect until autumn next year.
