Re-opening date set for Whitchurch Bridge

WHITCHURCH toll bridge is to re-open on September 26.

The crossing has been closed for refurbishment since October last year and was originally due to re-open in April.

Workmen have been reinforcing the underside with steel girders so it can cope with modern traffic levels.

It took longer than expected to dismantle the old bridge in November as it was found to be at risk of collapse.

The project was further delayed by flooding and high river levels in January and February this year.

Engineers from Balfour Beatty are now laying a new carriageway and damp proofing the structure.

The bridge will be re-opened once utility companies have relaid pipes and cables under the road.

The private company which owns the bridge says the work has cost £2million more than the £4million it budgeted.

Secretary Geoff Weir said he was “relieved” that the refurbishment was coming to an end.
