Road closure following gas main repairs

BUSINESSES in Wargrave were expecting to be hit this week after the main route to and from Henley was closed for gas main repairs.

BUSINESSES in Wargrave were expecting to be hit this week after the main route to and from Henley was closed for gas main repairs.

Wargrave Road was shut between Marsh Lane and Conways Bridge on Monday and is scheduled to be closed for a total of three weeks.

Traffic to and from Henley was being diverted via Knowl Hill and White Hill and the A850 Arriva bus service between Henley and Twyford has been suspended. A shuttle service between Wargrave and Twyford is operating on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Katie Miller, manager of the St George and Dragon pub, said: ?It has certainly cut down business but it?s not affecting us too badly as you can still get to us from a different direction.?

Lisa Caddick, managing director of Val Wyatt Marine in Willow Lane, said: ?It?s tough to say what effect it has had as we don?t have steady trade but it has been a little quieter than usual, although that isn?t necessarily unusual at this time of year.

?It?s always a little bit quieter in the summer season but it could be more of a problem if people aren?t able to get through to us.?

However, John Friend, who lives in Wargrave Road, welcome the road closure.

Mr Friend, who is president of Henley Rowing Club, said: ?I live at the [Henley] end of the road and can get out no problem, so I would be happy if it stayed closed. It?s lovely as there are no cars so I can use my bike.?

Fears that the road closure would affect Henley businesses don?t seem to have been realised.

Hyunok Sung, who owns Bucaroo in Friday Street, said: ?Trade has been the same as ever, not bad at all. To be honest, I didn?t even know the road was being closed.?

Christina Kilbee, a barmaid at the Anchor pub in Friday Street, said: ?On Monday lunchtime we had the normal amount of people. There were people on day trips and those who went to Rewind. It was just a normal Monday really.?
