DISILLUSIONED publicans are leaving Henley after a slump in trade and claims of crippling rent rises. In some cases they say rents have gone up by 100 per cent and not even the royal regatta could boost sales which are down a third. The exodus also comes in the wake of new government legislation — meant to safeguard brewery tenants — which has led some companies to introduce new 20-year contracts.

A Henley street was evacuated on Sunday after a gas pipe was severed in a road accident. Residents in Duke Street and part of Reading Road were rushed from their homes at midnight after the pipe burst following an accident outside Imprint Design. The fire brigade and emergency gas unit were called after the crash in which a blue Vauxhall Astra driven by Miss Susan Millward was in collision with the gas pipe.
