THE sum of £1 a week paid by the average household of three people is a “bargain”, says Henley’s borough treasurer, Mr A Ford, in a report on the accounts for the year ended March 31. He reveals that the penny rate product for the year 1965-66 was £1,976 19s 8d, which was greater than estimated in February 1965 chiefly because of appeals backdated four or five years and brought into account in the year under review.

At a meeting of Sonning Common Parish Council on Wednesday a letter from Rev J MacDonald-Smith was read out about the idea of using the new church buildings in Sedgewell Road as a community centre. It was decided to meet the Rev MacDonald-Smith to discuss the idea once the views of the diocese were known.

Members of Hambleden Women’s Institute were very sad to learn that Margaret Wilson, a founder member, had died on August 26. Mrs Wilson was the institute’s first secretary and also president for many years. Her beautiful 16th-century barn had been the setting for many happy WI occasions.
