Twenty five years ago...

A HUGE tanker carrying diesel heating fuel slid backwards down a snow-covered road and turned over on its side at Fawley Bottom. Police and fire crews were called to the scene as there were fears that harmful chemicals could be leaking from the vehicle. Neither the driver nor his passenger were hurt. The tanker was righted by sliding a special airbag underneath and inflating it.

Henley traders and residents have attacked plans to close Reading Road at Lower Shiplake for six days in order to resurface the road, clear drains and improve the kerb. They said the scheme would harm trade and bring traffic chaos to Harpsden and Shiplake.

Firemen were called to put out a fire in a first-floor flat above a Chinese restaurant in Duke Street, Henley. The blaze, which was the result of a burning chip pan, caused extensive smoke damage to the kitchen of the property. Crews alerted the occupant, who was asleep in a bedroom on the floor above, by raising a ladder to his window.
