Twenty five years ago...

GOLDEN oarsmen Matthew Pinsent and Steve Redgrave were overjoyed at the heroes’ welcome they received from Henley people on Friday. Flag-waving residents lined the streets to see the Atlanta Olympic champions and coach Jurgen Grobler become honorary citizens of the town. Cheering crowds welcomed the three heroes as they travelled through the town in a white convertible Rolls Royce.

A popular member of Henley Boxing Club has died at the age of 26 after suffering a stroke. Simon Butler, from Hare Hatch, died at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading where he was taken after feeling unwell during a training session at the club on Tuesday last week. Club chairman Harold Brandwood said that Mr Butler had complained of feeling dizzy.

Town councillor Ken Arlett has challenged Henley’s police chief Ali Dizaei to come up with hard facts to support his approach to underage drinking and drug use in the town. He said prominent townspeople were concerned that adverse publicity portrayed Henley as a booze and drugs haven.
