COMPANY director Gary Steadman, a “devoted family man”, lost his life in an attempt to save two children from drowning. Mr Steadman, 46, from Peppard, was on a beach in Portugal with his family when his 11-year-old daughter Hayley and her cousin Scott, 10, got into difficulties. Mr Steadman dived into the water to rescue the pair, who were being dragged out to sea by strong undercurrents.
A Henley businessman is launching a last-ditch attempt to rescue the royal regatta fireworks display which has been cancelled this year, breaking a tradition that spans almost a century. But Geoff Knight knows that he is facing a race against the clock if his dream of raising up to £12,000 to light up the sky on the Saturday of the regatta is to become a reality.
Henley town councillors have come across a novel way to make some extra money — by going into the movie business. The council has been approached by a film crew who want to shoot scenes featuring councillors on the town hall steps and in their chambers. Town clerk Colin Barlow said all he knows at the moment is that the programme is set in Devon and will be broadcast on Sunday evenings.
