Ten Years Ago

AN armed robber told a 69-year-old man who fought him off with a pickaxe handle: “For a little old man you’ve got a lot of courage.” Mohamed Ally was confronted by the robber, wielding a foot-long iron bar, as he was closing his shop last Friday. The attempted robbery at Peppard Stores followed a robbery at the Murco Petrol Station — just half a mile away — in Sonning Common last evening.

Baby Caitlin Louise Tinsley came into the world in a bit of a rush. So quickly in fact that dad, Andrew, had to turn his hand to midwifery — with a little help from the operator at ambulance HQ. It was 11pm last Monday evening when mum-to-be Nicky suddenly went into labour one week early. Within just a few minutes it was clear there was no time to make it to the Royal Berkshire Hospital and so a 999 call was made. Kelly Hopkin, who took the emergency call, told Andrew, an environmental consultant of Gainsborough Hill, what to do.

Television presenter Phillip Schofield has backed the campaign to save his village local. Mr Schofield, who presents This Morning on ITV, is helping to raise the profile of campaigners fighting to re-open the Walnut Tree pub in Fawley.
