LT COL Charles Desborough Burnell, who lives at Wargrave, celebrated his 90th birthday yesterday and was the recipient of a large number of congratulatory messages, including one from members of the Henley branch of the British Legion, with which he has been actively connected for 40 years and is currently president. Oarsman, soldier, stockbroker and local government administrator, Lt Col Burnell was awarded the DSO in 1918 and the OBE in 1954 and is the holder of the Territorial Decoration.
Mr C H W Troughton, who was awardedÂ the CBE in the New Year honours list, was recently appointed deputy chairman of W H Smith & Son in succession to Mr M C St J Hornby, who retired in June. Born in 1916, Mr Troughton, who lives in Hambleden, joined the company in April 1946, became a partner in 1948 and then director of the holdings companyÂ on its formation in 1949.
It is understood that the freehold and share capital of the Henley Model Laundry was sold to Maidenhead District Laundry Co on January 1 and it will be carrying on this long-established business on the same site. The former directors, Mr V E Lister, Miss V C Smith and Mr V C M Lister, have relinquished their entire interest in the company.
