HENLEY residents face the highest poll tax bill in South Oxfordshire — £464.41. Although the district’s bills will be lower this year by an average of £7, the charge is one of the 12 highest in the English shire counties. The variation across the district ranges from £435 at Crowmarsh, where the parish council has not set a precept, to £464 at Henley, which includes the town council’s share of £27.78.

Boat hire specialists Hobbs of Henley are preparing to launch a £500,000, 11ft Mississippi-style boat. The classically designed vessel, named the New Orleans, is being built at Greenwich and is the biggest boat of its kind to be built in London this decade.

A prisoner, who was convicted of burgling a Henley store, escaped from Oxford Jail yesterday after stealing a Royal Mail van to get away. Alan Hayes, 30, from Maidenhead, disappeared at 9.30am while working with a party of inmates in the prison officers’ mess. He was serving a sentence for breaking into Woolworths in Henley town centre.
