SAFEWAY is to submit an application to build a superstore on YMCA ground on the outskirts of Henley, opposite the proposed Tesco store. Henley YMCA this week confirmed it had entered into talks with the supermarket chain following last week’s revelation that it is interested in moving to the town.

A driver was beaten up by another motorist at Northfield End in Henley on Saturday. The assault took place at 11.45am after the 22-year-old victim, who was driving a Nova, overtook the other man on the A423. The attacker then overtook the victim before blocking the road and getting out and assaulting him. He then sped off. The victim suffered severe bruising to his face. Police have condemned the public for failing to intervene.

Half of the South Oxfordshire district councillors who represent the Henley and surrounding area are stepping down next month. Among the six not seeking re-election are Henley Mayor David Nimmo Smith and former council leader Rosalie Monbiot.
