A LEADING Conservative councillor has cancelled his holiday in a bid to thwart a move by Henley Residents’ Group to oust Margaret Day as the new mayor. Martin Cresswell has been told by party colleagues to attend Monday’s mayor-making ceremony or otherwise allow HRG to install new councillor Ken Arlett as mayor. Even so, his sacrifice could be in vain for the two Liberal Democrats who hold the balance of power say they have still to decide who they will vote for.

Tight security surrounded a wedding in Henley last weekend when the chief of Scotland Yard’s bomb squad married a London solicitor. Commander George Churchill- Coleman married Wendy McWilliams at the Church of St Mary in Hart Street. The couple both have long-standing connections with the town. Before the ceremony, the church was scoured for any potential threat by sniffer dogs and Special Branch officers patrolled the area.

Farmers in South Oxfordshire should stop growing crops over public footpaths or be prosecuted, according to the Henley-based Open Spaces Society. Kate Ashbrook, the society’s general secretary, said: “This year, too many farmers are flouting the law and too many paths are cropped.”
