A BRAVE rescuer was praised by police after he dragged a screaming girl from the mangled wreckage of her burning car seconds before it exploded in Remenham Hill. Mandy Clarke, 18, was trapped in the car after an accident and suffered a head injury. Police said Andrew Davies struggled to reach her for several minutes before risking his own life to unlock the seatbelt and pull her to safety. Miss Clarke was treated in hospital and required nearly 100 stitches across her forehead.

Huge cutbacks in corporate entertaining look set to cause a massive reduction in wining and dining at prestige suites along the Henley Royal Regatta course. Catering companies are reporting a big downturn in bookings. British Telecom, usually a big entertainer, has cut its orders by 80 per cent.

With just one week until the curtain goes up, Regatta Day, the rowing musical to be staged at the Kenton Theatre, is already a sell-out for its opening night. Ideas for the revival were sparked by a feature on the original production in the Henley Standard. The long-neglected tale of A Girl, the Diamonds and a Beard is being directed by our drama critic Catherine Saker.
