WATLINGTON Parish Council has agreed to contribute £500 to help a treasure trove that was found in the parish stay in the UK. Metal detectorist James Mather, from Tilehurst, found the jewellery, 15 ingots and more than 200 Anglo-Saxon coins in October 2015. The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford is trying to raise £1.35million to retain the hoard and has until January 31 to collect the last 20 per cent after receiving more than £1 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Parish councillor Tony Williamson said: “The most important thing is to keep this in Oxfordshire so we have all got access to it.”
