New way to choose

A NEW system for recruiting members of Watlington Parish Council has been adopted.

To co-opt new members the council will now interview each candidate individually in private and then agree by a show of hands their preference.

Until now candidates were all invited to speak about their suitablity in public at a council meeting and answer questions before a vote.

Vice-chairman Matt Reid said the old system put
candidates under pressure, adding: “It’s embarrassing for councillors and the candidates themselves.”

He said the new system was already used successfully by Chalgrove Parish Council.

A vacancy will be advertised for four weeks and any elector who would like to be considered should write to the parish clerk Kristina Tynan, giving their experience, why they would like to be a councillor and any interests they think would contribute to the role.
