Opposed to £3bn road

WATLINGTON Parish Council is to formally object to the proposed Oxford to Cambridge Expressway.

It says the £3 billion road has been brought forward with no formal public consultation, environmental assessment or parliamentary enquiry.

The route will be broadly aligned with the proposed east-west rail route from Abingdon to south of Milton Keynes and will pass either west or east of Oxford.

The Government says the road will create jobs, skills and housing.

But parish councillor Terry Jackson said: “The lack of due process and the clarity around the proposals contributes to considerable uncertainty, both about how the Expressway is intended to deliver benefit and the possible impact on homes, lives, the environment, amenities and facilities.”

The council is to join the Expressway Action Group with 42 other parishes and villages opposed to the road.

It will also write to Transport Secretary Chris Grayling, requesting a select committee inquiry and an environmental assessment.
