A COUNCILLOR representing Watlington has been appointed to the newly created post of cabinet member for education on Oxfordshire County Council, writes Rebecca Gilroy.
Steve Harrod, a Conservative who has been a county councillor since 2014, will have sole responsibility for schools after the role of cabinet member for children, education and families was split.
He said: “I’m really looking forward to taking on this new role at what is a very exciting and challenging time in education, both nationally and locally. I don’t pretend to have all the answers and will be bringing a very open mind to what works best here in Oxfordshire.
“Children’s education is perhaps the most essential requirement for the future success of society and is therefore something we all have a stake in.
“I’m very excited to begin working with the many extremely dedicated and talented people engaged in improving the lives of Oxfordshire children. I hope to further develop the council’s relationship with all state-
funded schools, academy chains and other partners.”
Councillor Harrod, an industrial market researcher, won a by-election for the Chalgrove and Watlington ward, which includes the parishes of Ewelme, Nettlebed, Pishill with Stonor, Pyrton, Swycombe and Watlington as well as Great Milton, where he lives.
He is also chairman of Great Milton Parish Council and a member of South Oxfordshire District Council.
Melinda Tilley, who has been cabinet member for children, education and families, will remain responsible for children and family services.
