WALKING into the impressive building which is now home to Hotel du Vin in Henley, you are immediately struck by your historic surroundings.
It is clear Hotel du Vin have worked very hard at ensuring the hotel and bistro, which opened on the site in 2005, marries well with the original old building.
The company has used the unique space to create quirky corners, like the walk-in cigar humidor, and touches of luxury with details like a dedicated champagne and cocktail bar and a glass-walled wine cellar.
My friend and I chose to enjoy a drink in the bar area, taking in the building, and relaxing on the very comfy couch. We were served pistachios with our drinks before being left to choose our dishes.
The new autumn menu includes all the classic, home-style dishes you would expect to see on a French restaurant menu — a range of apéritifs, escargots, cheese soufflé, moules frites marinière, chateaubriand. As well as the food, each course has a suggested wine pairing, available by the glass, from the bistro’s extensive wine menu. A thoughtful addition.
