Crowds gather to enjoy racing at Cookham Regatta

Crowds gathered to enjoy the Cookham Regatta in the sunshine on Saturday as the event returned to Marsh Meadow for another year.

Fuelled by hot drinks and bacon sandwiches from the Cookham Scouts, the site was quickly brought to life by the team.

Stalls soon lined Marsh Meadow, offering everything from chocolate to telescopes and displays from local charities.

There was food and drink to enjoy including Nepalese and Greek cuisines, barbecue food, Pimms and the ever-popular Cherry Pickers beer tent.

Dragon boat racing ‘stole the show’ on the river.

Teams wearing colourful, matching outfits competed in a double-elimination format, with races often being decided by a dragon’s nose at the finish line.

The Paddle Snatches from CrossFit Wycombe claimed victory, winning the Champions Cup, while the Plate Competition was awarded to Herries Mermaids.

Maidenhead Wendas, in their striking Where’s Wally? costumes came out on top to win The Best Crew Award.

The event was sponsored by Lightfoots Solicitors, who presented the awards.

Away from the river, the Bisham Silver Band were entertaining visitors near the tea tent, and youngsters were also enjoying fairground rides.

The popular dog show attracted ‘strong entries’, with judging taking place in the afternoon.

The event dates back to the late 19th century.

It is organised by the Rotary Clubs of Cookham Bridge and Maidenhead Thames, with support from scouts and volunteers, and ‘was hailed a great success’.

Organisers have thanked regular sponsors including The Shanly Foundation and the Louis Baylis Charitable Trust.

All profits will be given to rotary-supported charities, with this year’s lead beneficiary being Alzheimers Dementia Support (ADS).
