YOU’VE seen Bad Girls on the television — now they are taking to the stage at the Kenton Theatre in Henley.
The girls of Woodley Light Operatic Society are performing an adaptation of the acclaimed gritty prison drama, which ran for eight series and 107 episodes from 1999 to 2006 on ITV.
It is directed by Karen Bird, choreographed by David Parsonson and Amy Bingham is the musical director.
The production, which runs at the New Street venue until tomorrow night (Saturday), will be the last chance to see the original West End show costumes on stage while the score includes All Banged Up, Freedom Road and A List.
It begins with Helen Stewart as the new officer in charge of G wing. With a strong work ethic, a belief that the prisoners need to be supported, she puts her energy into treating the inmates with trust and helping them to make the best of their situation.But the stage is set for things to change and people’s true colours come to bear.
Then, audiences encounter the vulnerable young Rachel on her first night in the prison.
Shocked and confused she is offered support from prisoners Shell Dockley, her side-kick Denny Blood, and Jim Fenner the officer on duty on the wing.
It turns out that she makes the wrong choice with consequences that reverberate throughout the prison and the musical.
