ARTIST Louis Turpin returns to the Bohun Gallery in Henley after a two-year break.
His last show in 2013 was a sell-out and next month he is bringing a new collection of paintings.
The collection, entitled The Passion for Gardens Continues, celebrates some of the most important and recognisable gardens in the UK.
Louis’ broad brushstrokes and vivid use of colour capture the essence of the National Trust’s Lyte Carey, the Cornish Lost Gardens of Heligan and the exotic, sub-tropical gardens on Tresco on the Isles of Scilly.
These diverse gardens highlight the artist’s visual awareness and his ability to bring their spirit to life with paint.
The gardens of Great Dixter in East Sussex have held a lifelong fascination for the artist. Christopher Lloyd’s bold planting schemes sent shock waves through the horticultural world and Turpin’s sensitivity and understanding of this flamboyant garden result in paintings which bring the floral tapestries alive on the canvas and his visual awareness captures the very essence of this corner of England.
The artist is currently developing his own garden in to a kitchen garden and the associated commitment to interweaving vegetables and flowers is a clear preoccupation within the choice of plants in this collection of paintings.
Louis has received international recognition for his garden paintings and many feature in public and private collections.
He has received important commissions including a recent project to depict the gardens at Glyndebourne and was shortlisted for the National Portrait Award at the National Gallery in 1986. He works from his studio in Sussex and is available for private commissions.
