AN IPSDEN-based artist who spent three years in America honing her craft has announced plans to teach a beginners’ foundation course for would-be artists.

Denny Webb says she has been inspired by the success of the BBC’s The Big Painting Challenge and Sky Arts’ Landscape Artist of the Year.

She is convinced there are lots of frustrated potential artists out there — many of whom would love to paint but don’t know where to start.

“Painting is back in fashion,” said Denny. “Particularly since the recent rash of TV programmes. But the problem is where to go when you’re starting out.

“Many would-be artists end up going to mixed-ability classes and try to learn ‘on the hoof’ — but this solution can be very disheartening for the student, especially with watercolour as it’s such a difficult medium.

“Without a proper foundation, students end up lacking confidence in their painting skills, acquire bad habits and may even give up.

“Alternatively, new students join so-called beginners’ classes only to find themselves stuck in a loop of unstructured lessons with other students who have been ‘beginners’ for years and lack the confidence to take their painting to the next level.”

On Friday, January 29, Denny is hosting a watercolour workshop at Boundary House in Ipsden, painting “owls of myth and magic”.

The session runs from 10am to 4pm and full details are available on her website at www.dennywebb.com

Places on Denny’s three-day beginners’ foundation course for artists are available in March and April.
