IN the summer members of Whitchurch and Goring Heath History Society go on outings.
Our visit to Uffington took place on a beautiful sunny day which really enhanced the downland scenery and the White Horse could be clearly seen on the hill above.
The Tom Brown’s School Museum had extensive information about the monuments in the area, the school building and a special display about a downed Second World War aircraft.
Our next stop was at the “Cathedral of the Vale”, the enormous cruciform church in the village.
After a pub lunch in Woolstone, we went on to Compton Beauchamp where we found the little estate church in an idyllic spot among fields and trees.
In August everyone takes a rest but we will come back together on Thursday, September 19 to hear Mike Cooper talk about “The defence of Reading, from Vikings to nuclear war”.
The society meets on the third Thursday of the month with lectures and member-led meetings from September to May. Membership costs just £12 per annum and includes refreshments. For more information, call Vicky Jordan on 0118 984 3260 or email vicky
