THE mother of Celebrity Big Brother contestant Calum Best is knitting him a scarf for when he leaves the reality TV show.
Angie Best, who lives in Bix and owns the Metaphysical gym at Henley Business School, had never watched the Channel 5 show before her son became a housemate on this year’s 15th series.
Now she tunes in every night as her son is the “talk of my classes” and people stop her in the street to wish Calum good luck.
Mrs Best said: “Everyone comes up and says they’re cheering for him. It’s really lovely and I’m very thankful to everyone for their support.”
Calum, a 33-year-old model and the son of the late George Best, reportedly signed a £50,000 deal to appear on the programme and is currently the favourite to win.
He is one of 11 of the original 15 housemates who are still in the house after two weeks. The others include former children’s TV presenter Keith Chegwin and actresses Nadia Sawalha and Patsy Kensit.
The series has already courted controversy.
Former Coronation Street actor Ken Morley was ejected for using racist language while American actor Jeremy Jackson was thrown out after forcibly removing glamour model Chloe Goodman’s dressing gown. She was later voted out by the public.
American singer Alexander O’Neal chose to leave after rowing with American blogger Perez Hilton.
Mrs Best said: “Apparently this is the most watched and talked-about series of Celebrity Big Brother ever.
“It’s so disgusting and horrendous and vile that it makes fantastic television — and, of course, my poor boy is stuck in the middle of that. He comes out of it looking like the sanest one in there, which is a scary thought in itself.
“I couldn’t care less whether he wins or not. What would it mean — that he’s nicer than any of those turnips in that house? His prospects of winning are high according to my Twitter feed but I’m not all that bothered really.”
Mrs Best started knitting Calum the beige woollen scarf on the day he went into the house and adds a little more to it each day so she can give it to him when he leaves the house.
She said: “It is just a silly mummy thing. I suppose it keeps me thinking of him and gives me something to do while I’m watching that dreadful show.”
