THE annual Royal East Berkshire Agricultural Association ploughing competition took place at Mumbery Hill, near Wargrave, at the weekend.

A total of 40 ploughmen took part in the contest in which they had to plough a 50x10m plot of land in four-and-a-half hours before being scored by the judges.

Each competitor brought along their own tractors and ploughs ranging from Sixties to modern machines.

The competition was won by Matt Sell of Lee Farm, Pinkneys Green, who was awarded the Sir Richard Haddon Supreme Cup.

Mr Sell, 37, competed with a Kverneland plough and Valtra tractor.

More than 30 other awards were handed out on the day in categories as varied as beef, cake-making and long service in agriculture.

Feathers and Fur gave talks about their birds of prey and Old Beams Kennels staged a dog show.

Staff from Shorts Agriculture were available to take members of the public around the ploughing plots on a tractor and trailer.

Hannah Donaldson, secretary of the association, said: “It was so much better than last year, when the weather was disgusting. We had about 300 to 400 visitors and it was a very enjoyable day.”

Next year’s match will take place at Sheeplands Farm, Cookham, on Sunday, September 28.
