PLANS have been drawn up for the redevelopment of social housing in Shiplake.
South Oxfordshire Housing Association wants to demolish and replace Sidney Harrison House in Mill Road.
It proposes demolishing the 14 vacant flats and four bungalows and building four one-bedroom flats, eight two-bedroom flats and four five-bedroom houses.
Soha says the flats would be “affordable” for the elderly and include communal areas while the houses would be sold privately.
All the buildings would be three storeys but with the second storey contained within the roof space.
TSH Architects says the proposed development would improve the social housing the association offers.
It says: “The range of accommodation that these buildings provided is no longer of a type or standard that Soha aspires to provide. They are of no architectural merit and could not readily be adapted to meet those needs.
“The proposed scheme aims to react to the constraints of the site and by virtue of the design provide a sensitive contribution to the street. The houses also create positive street frontage, the plots being sufficiently deep to allow significant front gardens and extensive rear garden amenity space.
“The location and orientation of the houses ensures that there is no detrimental effect of the privacy or amenity of the adjoining property.”
The main access to the site from Mill Road would remain.
Soha announced in October 2014 that Sidney Harrison House would close and the tenants would be moved out.
The association hosted public meetings with residents and guaranteed all services would remain in place until all the residents had a new home.
There was also consultation with Shiplake Parish Council and South Oxfordshire District Council, the planning authority.
In April, there was a suspected arson attack on the former social housing complex. A wing of one building was badly damaged but firefighters managed to stop the blaze spreading to the main building.
The district council will make a decision by October 3.
