DRESSAGE Olympic champion Carl Hester visited Caversham Park Golf Club last Friday to deliver an engaging and entertaining evening organised by the Oxfordshire branch of the British Horse Society, writes Florence Wiggins.
The fund-raising event attracted more than 175 people of all ages and raised at least £1,900 for the society, who describes Carl as “a wonderful ambassador for the sport”.
Interviewed by Kate Green, managing editor of Country Life magazine, Carl gave an insightful account of life as one of the world’s best dressage riders — from the highs of winning an Olympic gold team medal at London 2012 to the lows of “celebration dinners at Kentucky Fried Chicken on the M1” and the “horrors” he rode to get there.
The event was well-organised and compelling, with not only fantastic entertainment but a raffle, cupcakes and books on sale — all to raise money for the British Horse Society.
Carl, whose autobiography Making It Happen is due to be published next April, was charming, witty and more than willing to talk, making him even more of an inspiration to us all.
Committee member Penny Holley said: “Friday night was more about raising our profile in the area and showing that the British Horse Society is not just about exams and testing, but about fun and information for the grassroots rider.”
