THE author of Girl With a Pearl Earring is coming to Henley next week to help launch a new exhibition at the Lady Sew and Sew fabric warehouse in Farm Road.
Tracy Chevalier is a long-standing supporter of Fine Cell Work — a charity that works with 29 British prisons, supporting more than 400 prisoners in the production of exquisite quilts, needlepoint and embroidery.
The aim is for prisoners to learn new skills that foster hope, discipline and self-esteem. Patrons of the charity include Dame Judi Dench and fabric designer Kaffe Fassett.
To mark the launch of the Fine Cell Work exhibition at Lady Sew and Sew on Thursday evening (April 14), Tracy Chevalier will give a talk on her experiences with the charity.
This will include the story of the award-winning Sleep Quilt and the 60 men and women who created it across nine prisons.
More than 20 quilts will be on display at Lady Sew and Sew as part of the exhibition — including the Wandsworth Prison Quilt, which was commissioned by the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Fine Cell Work will have a pop-up shop at Lady Sew and Sew, with all proceeds going to the charity.
Tickets for “An evening with Tracy Chevalier” are priced £18 and include a complimentary glass of wine or soft drink. The event starts at 7.30pm but the doors open at 6pm. For more information or to book, call (01491) 572528 or visit www.ladysewandsew.co.uk
The Fine Cell Work exhibition will be available to view on weekdays from 10am to 4pm until Monday, May 2. Entry is free of charge.
