BELLY dancing is both a relaxing and enlivening dance that can help tone the body and improve body confidence. Its physiological benefits include improved fitness, better circulation, suppleness and correction of postural alignment.

On a body confidence level, many women feel they have regained their ‘feminine self’ and become more comfortable with their bodies through belly dancing.

The basis of the core moves is always the centre just below the navel or in esoteric arts the place known as the chakra or simply ‘the centre’.

Physical fitness can greatly improve with regular sessions of belly dancing. It helps firm and tone the muscles in a gentle way, especially the abdominals, arms, upper back, hips and thighs.

A more vigorous belly dance ‘workout’ lasting for at least thirty minutes, practiced 3-4 times a week, will certainly improve muscle tone and overall fitness, as belly dancing can be a fun and energetic form of aerobic dance.

Sonia Matthews started Belly Dancing in South Africa, and successfully operated a Belly Dancing school in Mauritius for 4 years.

Sonia’s Belly Dance Academy was launched in January 2013 in Caversham and Sonning Common.

As from April 2013, Sonia will be working on a new form of afro-arabic dance which will culminate in a unique, never done before live workshop with a group a 8 drummers in June. Join the group as from the first week of April, sessions are as follows:

Rivermead Leisure Centre in Caversham: Mondays 8-9 pm and Wednesdays 10-11 am.

Thames Valley Gym in Sonning Common: Thursdays 9:30 10:30 am

Sessions are appropriate to and open to complete beginners.
