JAW pain problems — officially known as temporomandubilar malfunction — are very common in the population at large, with 25 per cent of people suffering. However very few people are aware that physiotherapy and exercises can help.
The jaw is normally painfree, noise-free and able to move without restriction. Symptoms of jaw dysfunction include:
* Pain over the jaw, face or sinuses
* Restricted jaw motion
* Tight feeling and limited opening of the mouth (normal opening four fingers)
* Clicks and other joint sounds are common; they are not significant unless there are other symptoms
* Ear symptoms such as aching, ringing or a blocked feeling
* Headache or neckache
* ldquo;Locking” episodes — inability to open or close the mouth
* Grinding or clenching
Angela Botha, a chartered physiotherapist at Physiolistic, specialises in the treatment of jaw pain. Treatment promotes healing and reduces pain and swelling. It also aids muscle relaxation and increases your jaw’s range of motion.
After a thorough examination of your jaw and neck, treatment will be individualised to you and may include:
* Advice on activity modification
* Soft tissue mobilisations
* Ultrasound therapy
* Acupuncture
* Trigger point therapy
* Joint mobilisation
* Postural work
* Exercises.
