THERE are two forms of periodontal disease: gingivitis and periodontitis.
Gingivitis
Most people will exhibit signs of gingivitis at some time.
This can be seen as redness or puffiness of the gums — or more commonly bleeding on brushing.
Gingivitis, if left untreated, can lead on to periodontitis, which is the second form of gum disease.
Periodontitis
This is a destructive infection of the supporting bone and gums of the teeth.
It can often be painless and so be quite advanced before it is discovered.
As with most destructive diseases the earlier it is caught the more successful treatment can be.
How can I tell if I have gingivitis or periodontitis?
The important things to watch out for are:
• Bleeding gums, or blood on your toothbrush
• Bad breath
• Teeth that are discoloured by plaque or calculus
• Loosening of teeth
• Teeth changing position
• Gaps appearing between teeth
• Food wedging between teeth
• Receding gums, making the teeth look longer
• Gingivitis and periodontitis are not painful when caused by plaque
• In the advanced stages, painful abscesses can develop.
There is a growing body of research that shows untreated periodontal disease is also linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, problems in pregnancy and even dementia.
Unfortunately periodontal disease is not always well diagnosed or well treated.
