A WOMAN has written a book on the history of Townlands Hospital.
Valerie Alasia, of Makins Road, Henley, was a founding member of the Townlands Steering Group and decided to write Henley Union Workhouse — The Story of Townlands after encouragement from her tutor on a local history course at Reading University.
The book traces from when the hospital was a workhouse for the poor to its recent redevelopment. Mrs Alasia visited the National Archives in Kew, the Oxford Archives and Henley library to research the book.
She said: “The book is now 222 pages and coming out at a time when the old buildings are being transformed. Despite the hardships suffered in the workhouse, I have tried to make the book readable, with some lighter moments.”
The book is published by Brewin Books and costs £14.95.
