VOLKSWAGEN, the giant German carmaker, is staging a remarkable interactive exhibition in Berlin that looks back on its own great history in motorsport.
The retrospective exhibition, which can be seen from September 5 to October 30 at the Volkswagen Group Forum in Berlin, marks the 50th anniversary of Volkswagen Motorsport. It features motorsport exhibits, accompanied by various interactive modules enabling visitors to experience five decades of VW motorsport through video, audio and picture installations.
The spotlight is on eight unique cars with an historical connection to Volkswagen Motorsport — from the Golf that won the Group A World Rally Championship and the Race Touareg that enjoyed great success in the legendary Dakar Rally. Also on show will be the current WRC-winning VW Polo and the twin-engine Golf that made a great impression on the Pikes Peak hill climb.
As well as Volkswagen’s rally legends, exhibits will also include a Sixties Formula Vee single-seater racing car, which launched VW into motorsport, and a present-day Golf GTI TCR from the German carmaker’s successful customer racing programme.
Visitors will be given an insight into everything from teamwork to technology that has brought VW motorsport success. Interactive elements will guide visitors through the successes of Volkswagen Motorsport. Visitors are taken through the history by stages at the exhibition.
Volkswagen Motorsport was founded in July 1966 in Munich. Its history started with the popular Formula Vee and Formula Super Vee series, in which Keke Rosberg, Niki Lauda and Helmut Marko launched their careers.
Among those to graduate through Formula Three were Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher, record Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen and record DTM (German Touring Car Championship) champion Bernd Schneider. VW subsequently enjoyed great success at the Dakar Rally. The Wolfsburg-based manufacturer rejoined the World Rally Championship in 2013 and picked up nine world championship titles in the first three years.
The VW Polo R WRC — the most successful car in the history of the World Rally Championship — can also be seen in Berlin from Monday.
