A NEW home has been found for two pigs which were abandoned in a field in Checkendon.
It follows an appeal in last week’s Standard by animal health experts at Oxfordshire County Council.
A council spokesman said the pigs, thought to be the kunekune breed, the smallest domesticated breed of pig, should be relocated within the next week.
Villager Lynne Thoms, who has been helping to feed the animals, said: “It will be nice to know that they are safe and not going to be the cause of an accident or the subject of people’s complaints.”
Jenny Campbell, whose homes overlook the field, said: “It is lovely news as long as they are not looked after just until they are eaten. It might seem silly but I think it’s nice if just occasionally animals which are bred to be eaten are left to live their lives out. I shall miss them when they go.”
Doug Griggs, chairman of the parish council, said: “I am very pleased. We have had a problem with that field for a couple of years so let’s hope it quietens down now.”
Sarah Jenkins, who owns the field, said she had been given “absolute hell” by residents complaining about the pigs.
She said: “I have had months of grief and abuse from the locals and the parish council. There has been trespassing and vandalism and my stable has been filled with hay and pig poo. I don’t really care what happens to them, as bad as it sounds. They are not friendly pigs, they are not pets.”
