VOLUNTEERS tidied up an area outside the scout hut in Sonning Common.
The Village Gardeners worked with children, parents and leaders to dig over a flower bed in the Baskerville Road play area next to the hut.
They also planted up a number of containers, including a tractor tyre, with 18 packs of herbs including fennel, chives and spring onions as well as vegetables such as radishes, carrots and spinach.
The £40 worth of seeds had been donated to the volunteer group by the Royal Horticultural Society.
All the plants will be looked after by the scouts and guides who meet at the hut.Councillor Chrissie Phillips-Tilbury, who chairs the Village Gardeners, said she would now like to find space in the village for a communal food and vegetable garden looked after by residents.
She said: “I hope that this will be the first of many other community projects. Vegetables and herbs could be grown in quite small spaces, in tubs or troughs as well as larger areas.
“Sonning Common residents really care about their village and a scheme like this could work really well.”
Meanwhile, Peppard Building Supplies has provided the group with new tabards worth £250.
