MORE than 30 people were taken on a guided walk around Wargrave chalk pit on Saturday.
The walkers, who are members of the Berkshire Local Geoconservation group, spent the morning at the site off Braybrooke Road, which has been transformed thanks to the work of volunteers over the last five years.
The 1.5-mile walk allowed visitors to look at the chalkface at the pit and also view some of the wildlife environments created by the volunteers, including a pond and habitats for slow worms, newts, foxes and red kites.
After the tour, the group walked through Wargrave to the River Thames and St Mary’s churchyard in Station Road.
Organiser Penny Miller said: “We were very pleased with the turnout and we’ve had some nice emails since from people saying how much they enjoyed it.
“Some of the people who came had never visited the chalk pit before and others hadn’t been for years so I think they were pleasantly surprised by how much it has changed.”
Wargrave chalk pit is one of 21 geological sites in Berkshire which the Berkshire Local Geoconservation group wants to preserve for their scientific or landscape importance.
The volunteers, who meet on a Friday once a month, have spent the winter clearing brambles and nettles to allow wildflowers to grow.
Since the group began in 2011 members have cleared trees as well as installing paths around the chalk pit for walkers.
In 2012, the Friends of Wargrave Chalk Pit won £500 after being named runner-up in the Dorothy Morley Conservation Awards, which are held annually in memory of the Berkshire rural issues campaigner who died in 1995. The money was used to create a pond.
