MORE than 4,700 toads have been saved from death on a busy Henley road thanks to wildlife enthusiasts.

Volunteers have spent every night of the past two months helping toads across Marlow Road to spawning ponds in the grounds of Henley Business School.

Members of the Toad Patrol picked up the creatures in woodland on the Culden Faw Estate and used buckets to carry them to safety.

In 1997, a road tunnel was installed at Hambleden for the toads but they won’t use it.

This year’s haul, which also included 410 frogs and 33 newts, is smaller than usual due to the recent fluctuating temperatures.

Angelina Jones, one of the organisers, said: “In general amphibians will only be on the move at dusk when the temperature is 7C-plus and ideally it’s damp.

Of the many Toad Patrol groups nationally, ours consistently helps to move the largest amount of toads annually.”

Mrs Jones thanked Culden Faw Estates for allowing the group access to its land.
