AFTER a month’s break from RFUW Championship South West Division 2 action, Henley Hawks Women got back into the swing of things with a comfortable victory over Chipping Sodbury Ladies at Dry Leas on Sunday.
The visitors were armed with a big pack and hoped to cause the Hawks trouble in the set piece. This proved to be the case for the first 30 minutes as Henley struggled to win their own ball and create turnovers in the loose.
However, with the little possession they had it was Henley who opened the scoring. A well-worked ball found its way into the hands of Miller to cross in the corner for her maiden try.
The Hawks were soon back in the Sodbury 22 and good ball retention saw Dudding sneak in close to the posts. From the following kick-off Henley handed the ball back to a pack that wanted to make a point. This they did and drove over from a good series of pick and goes.
The half finished with Henley pressing and good hands saw Wheeler cross for her maiden try in Hawks colours. Dudding converted to make it 17-5.
The second half started much as the first ended with the Hawks starting to spread their wings. Atkinson, now moulding into her new role at open side, was always in support and took full advantage to score under the posts.
With the conversion made Henley were now hunting for the bonus point try and this duly came from Dudding.
Soon after a break from Solowin down the left touch line allowed Miller to score her second.
The rustiness of not playing had now gone and the pace of the game had chanced. This was through no small part to the return of Forbes, back from a broken ankle earlier in the season.
Lucy Carr, through injury, had retired so allowed Forbes moved from the wing to her customary role of scrum half. There was also a promising debut from Scott.
Aktinson broke away with her pace to score from her own half. Another conversion from Dudding took her personal tally to 16.
It was to be a day of maiden tries with Ferguson running a good line off Wheeler to complete the scoring.
