A NEW musical inspired by the music, life and times of the legendary singer Tina Turner comes to Oxford in March as part of a national tour, writes Lesley Potter.
Soul Sister, written by John Miller and Pete Brooks, follows the highs and lows of Turner’s life — the passion and heartbreak of her marriage to Ike Turner and the subsequent rise of her solo career, which completely eclipsed her former husband’s. As one of the world’s best-loved divas, and gay icon, her 50-year career in showbiz included album and single sales totalling around 180 million.
The jukebox musical features all the big Turner classics, including River Deep, Mountain High, Proud Mary, Private Dancer and Simply The Best.
Turner is played by Emi Wokoma, whose previous stage credits include Hairspray at the Shaftesbury Theatre and a role as one of the Ronettes in Little Shop Of Horrors in Birmingham.
lSoul Sister plays at the New Theatre in Oxford from Monday, March 4 to Saturday, March 9. Box office: 0844 871 3020 or visit www.atgtickets.com/oxford
